City Theatre closes its 2006/07 subscription season with the award-winning play by Lynn Nottage, Intimate Apparel, running May 3–27, 2007, on City Theatre’s mainstage. Intimate Apparel will be directed by Diane Rodriguez (Pyretown at City Theatre), who comes to Pittsburgh from Los Angeles, where she is Associate Producer/Director of New Play Production at the Mark Taper Forum.

The bustling world of New York City during ragtime—1905—comes alive onstage in Intimate Apparel. At the heart of the play is Esther (Tracey Leigh), an unmarried African-American lingerie seamstress. While working she hears secrets of high society from the socialite Mrs. Van Buren (Erica Highberg), and gets the lowdown on life in the Tenderloin from Mayme (Maria Becoates Bey), a piano-playing prostitute. When Esther begins receiving love letters from George (John Eric Parker), who’s working in Panama to dig the canal, these clients help her to reply. Esther makes her gorgeous garments at the boarding house of Mrs. Dickson (Linda Haston), and shops for fine fabrics from the Orthodox Jewish cloth merchant Mr. Marks (Michael Goodfriend). Using threads of gender, racial, class and religious issues, playwright Lynn Nottage sews the stories of these six fascinating characters into a richly detailed drama, embroidered with romance.

The design team for City Theatre’s production of Intimate Apparel is: Tony Ferrieri (Scenic), Pei-Chi Su (Costumes), Andrew David Ostrowski (Lighting), and Elizabeth Atkinson (Sound).

Intimate Apparel won the 2004 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, the Outer Critics Circle Best Play Award, and the American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award. Lynn Nottage received the 2004 PEN/Laura Pels Award for literary excellence and a 2005 Guggenheim grant for playwriting. She is the author of several other plays, including Crumbs From the Table of Joy.
