Intern with Pittsburgh’s most dynamic theatre and learn the structure and operation of a not-for-profit regional theatre.

City Theatre is the place to experience consistently exceptional productions of fresh new plays, writt en and created by world-class artists, in a socially engaging and diverse atmosphere. Intern with Pittsburgh’s most dynamic and ground-breaking theatre, and learn the structure and operation of a not-for-profit regional theatre. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Tracy Brigden, and Managing Director, Greg Quinlan, City Theatre will produce seven shows in its 2006-2007 season. Located on the historic and vibrant South Side, City Theatre has two stages—a 270 seat main stage and the 120 seat Lester Hamburg Studio Theatre. The theatre operates with a 2.3 million dollar budget and a full-t ime staff of twenty four, with additional seasonal and production run staff.

Interns experience the workings of a regional theatre through the perspective of their placement, attendance at productions and other City Theatre events, and through collaboration with City Theatre staff. Additionally, interns will participate in regular colloquiums with fellow City Theatre interns that will feature discussions, guest speakers, and other professional development and networking opportunities.

Internships are available in both administrative and artistic areas, as well as specialized placements in technical theatre areas based on prior experience. An internship is generally a full season (September–May), and requires a commitment of 15 hours a week. Summer internships are also available (May–August). Please note that not all positions are offered in every term, and available positions are dependent on the needs of the theatre throughout the season. A modest stipend is available or college credit can be arranged with the student’s academic institution.

Development Intern
The Development department is responsible for attracting and managing all Contributed Income to the theatre. Intern will assist the department in efforts to reach this goal. Intern will be responsible for managing the annual grant report and application calendar, researching and inquiring about new foundation support sources (nationally and locally), helping to plan donor cultivation events for the 2006-2007 season, preparing corporate sponsorship materials, drafting grant submissions and reports, and assisting in the administration of the Annual Fund.

Production Intern
The Production department oversees all of the technical production aspects for the entire season. Intern will maintain and track production schedules as well as financial and archival records as related to productions within the season. The intern will have the opportunity to observe and work with in-house production and administrative/artistic staff, as well as visiting designers and directors dependent on the specific needs of each project/production. Other specific management and/or technical duties are available to interns possessing prior production and technical experience. Candidate must be highly organized, and detail oriented. Computer and math skills are a must.

Education and Outreach Intern
Intern will assist the Director of Education with the implementation of education programs, which include Young Playwrights, Student Matinees, and access measures for patrons with disabilities. Duties will include the research, writing, and design of teacher resource guides; assisting in the facilitation of Young Playwrights workshops, Contest, and annual Festival; serving as an on-site representative at education and outreach events; and other special projects and duties as needed. Candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills; be comfortable with research; and have a knowledge of and/or interest in theatre education.

Literary Intern
City Theatre’s Literary Manager and Dramaturg manages all literary initiatives of the theatre, which include the solicitation and evaluation of scripts for production consideration, as well as new play and production dramaturgy. Interns in this department will have the opportunity to assist in tracking literary submissions and in the research and development of dramaturgical materials to support the artistic process. Candidate must be a strong writer, comfortable with research, and have a strong attention to detail.

Administrative Intern
This intern will work with several departments as varied as Literary Management, Marketing, Casting, Sales, Education, and Production Management. Intern will assist City Theatre staff on a variety of special projects, and provide general administrative support as needed.

Specialized Technical Placements
Specialized production internships are available in areas such as costumes, scenic design and prop artistry to qualified applicants. These placements allow students to partner with leading professional artists in their fields. Interns are teamed with designers and/or production technicians to assist them for the duration of a production or throughout a semester or full season. These positions are available on a limited basis throughout the season to advanced candidates only.
