Below you will find a list of the up coming play involved in the 10th Annual Young Playwrights Festival.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PLAYS:

The Museum Disaster by Sarah Gorham
South Hills Middle School (Attending Pittsburgh Brashear High School this fall)

A field trip to the museum should be fun but four classmates wish they were anywhere else when their bickering results in destruction. How do you fix a priceless work of art? That problem leads the classmates to ever more creative and resourceful (if ridiculous) solutions to try and put the pieces back together (thanks to one well-stocked fanny pack). But in the end they learn their lesson—and it has nothing at all to do with art history.

The Nerds of the Century by John Marabello
South Hills Middle School (Attending Bishop Canevin High School this fall)

Eric and his posse—the Mathematic Homeskillets—rule the turf at Math Camp every summer so Eric can’t compute why the new guy Steve doesn’t want to join the gang. But it all adds up when Steve reveals his true identity and his calculating ambition to supplant Eric as The Smartest Kid in Camp. With his reputation, his pen collection, and the coveted Golden Calculator all at stake, can Eric win the annual math tournament and solve the Steve problem once and for all? Or is he in for a mathematics smackdown?

A Surprise and a Secret by Hannah Tobin
Keystone Oaks Middle School

Violet can’t wait to surprise her parents with her set paintings for the school production of Romeo and Juliet. But her brother Ryan plans to keep it a secret from mom and dad (especially dad) that he’s playing Romeo. As Violet and Ryan try to sustain the surprise and secret, their cover stories get increasingly extreme (and sports-related)—but how long can they really keep their parents from finding out? And who will finally win the struggle over whether or not their parents will see the play?

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYS:

Betrayal by Isabel D’Angelo
Washington High School

Alex and Lily are the picture-perfect couple. Together they’ve built a loving marriage, a comfortable daily routine, and a traditional, cozy home: husband, wife, and little dog. But a dark secret reveals the crack in this picturesque façade, and an unthinkable deal seals the betrayal that will propel the perfect household toward a tragic and inevitable end.

The Flame Tamer by Rebecca Levine
Pittsburgh Allderdice High School

In a prehistoric village suffering from drought, Pintono makes a startling discovery of a new element that holds forth the promise of warmth, comfort, and nourishment. He names it “fire.” But soon Pintono declares himself the village leader and the fire’s destructive potential flares up with dangerous clarity until fourteen-year-old Kiana dares to step forward and challenge the unchecked forces of man and nature. A parable that illustrates how suddenly an unattended flame can escalate into a hazardous wildfire.

Saving a Friendship by Hannah Newman
Home Schooled

Kelly has been acting strange lately, and Alexa fears they might be drifting apart. Little does Alexa realize that around Kelly’s behavior is woven a web of mystery and intrigue—and she is at the very center of it! Will their friendship survive a top-secret mission? Or will this bond be shaken and stirred?
