“Legends from the Burgh showcases a master craftsman at work and is not to be missed.” –

Pittsburgh, PA (November 14, 2016). City Theatre adds to its season of contemporary plays and exciting CityEvents, announcing Tamara Tunie: Legends from the ‘Burgh. Pittsburgh native and Law & Order: SVU star, Tamara Tunie returns to her roots, performing songs by hometown legends. Her band includes Roger Humphries on drums, Jeff Grubbs on bass, and Max Leake conducting and playing piano. Ms. Tunie, a Tony and Drama Desk Award winner has performed Legends from the ‘Burgh on tour and in New York City to packed houses and critical acclaim. Performances are December 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage. Tickets are on sale now.

Star of stage and screen Tamara Tunie will enchant audiences with an evening-length cabaret of songs from the wide array of artists that hail from the City of Three Rivers—a star-studded group that includes Lena Horne, Henry Mancini, Phyllis Hyman, and George Benson. Known for her starring roles in film (Flight opposite Denzel Washington), television series, and Broadway shows (Julius Caesar, Dreamgirls), Tunie brings her talents back to her hometown in Legends from the ‘Burgh.

Other credits include: Broadway: Julius Caesar with Denzel Washington, Oh Kay with Brian Stokes Mitchell, Dreamgirls (20th Anniversary Benefit Concert), Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. Regional: American Son (Berkshire theatre Award Best Actress in a Drama), Familiar (Obie Award Best Actress in an Off- Broadway Play), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Les Liasons Dangereuse, Tartuffe, Antony and Cleopatra, All’s Well That Ends Well, Troilus and Cressida (New York Shakespeare Festival, Central Park), Loose Knit. Having studied classical voice, and with a B.F.A. in musical theatre from Carnegie Mellon University, Ms. Tunie added jazz to her repertoire several years ago, and has performed at the legendary Allen Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center and Feinstein’s at The Regency. She has performed with such incomparable musicians as Mike Renzi, Billy Stritch, and Roger Humphries, to name a few, and she has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Penn State University Allegheny County’s Student Scholarship Fund with her performances of All That’s Jazz! She has graced the stage at the beautiful state-of-the-art theatre at Malloy College’s Madison Theatre. She has also performed for the Mabel Mercer Foundation at Town Hall and at Symphony Space, bringing down the house with music from Billie “Lady Day” Holiday to Cole Porter, after which one critic wrote, “Tunie SWINGS, sings great, looks great!”
