Andrew W. Mellon is a household name who is celebrated for his business acumen, philanthropy, and his impact on the arts and culture in Pittsburgh and beyond. This original one act play, by Frank Motz, tells the little-known story of Mellon’s detainment and the unlikely friendship between this disliked and shrewd business man and a profoundly unbothered and financially strained Italian Immigrant. This timely show asks us to consider the cult of celebrity, taxation of the ultra wealthy, and the influence of abruptly changing political winds. This show is paired with a bonus epilogue, written by Patricia Lowry, that provides a window into understanding this once-hated millionaire as our modern society struggles with similar themes regarding the funding of the arts and the appropriateness of amassing great wealth at a time when many are struggling to pay the bills.

It’s Christmas Eve and George Bailey our hometahn hero is abaht to throw in the terrible towel. Life ain’t been all that wonderful for a guy working overtime trying to lasso the moon. And just when he’s sure the whole world would be a better place without him, a wing-less angel swoops dahn to remind him that a man who has friends is the richest man in tahn.

Drawing on the voices of Ukrainian defenders, haunting polyphonic songs, and conversations between Ukrainian and American veterans, it transforms lived experience into a landscape where folklore and testimony intertwine, and where beauty, violence, and magic co-exist. At once a confessor’s circle, a choral anthem, and a gritty folktale tuned to our time, this intimate yet epic new work reveals that remembering the details is an act of resistance, and telling the story is the path to freedom.
