EDIA Statement: 

City Theatre is committed to creating an artistic environment where every person who is onstage, backstage, on staff and board, or in our audience feels welcomed, respected, and valued. As a home for new and adventurous plays, we believe that a multiplicity of lived experiences strengthens the art we make and the communities we serve. 

Our work is grounded in equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion, and belonging. We recognize that systemic barriers have historically limited participation in the arts, and we are dedicated to addressing those barriers through ongoing learning, transparent practices, and responsible stewardship of our resources. This commitment includes cultivating equitable hiring processes and diverse methods of thought; fostering safe, anti-harassment working conditions; expanding access for artists, staff, and audiences of all abilities; and ensuring that our storytelling reflects the breadth of Pittsburgh’s communities and the nation. 

City Theatre upholds the values of key industry partners, including but not limited to Actors’ Equity Association, Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, United Scenic Artists, League of Resident Theatres, and National New Play Network. We strive to maintain rehearsal rooms and performance spaces where all union and non-union artists can work with dignity, fairness, and freedom of expression. 

Our values are rooted in respect for every individual. We believe in supporting artists’ creative voices, encouraging dialogue across differences, and providing a space where diverse perspectives can be heard without fear of discrimination. As policies and cultural climates shift, our dedication to fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment remains steadfast and consistent with all applicable laws. 

City Theatre understands that the art we create is not in a vacuum and that we have the responsibility to celebrate diverse and authentic stories. We are in the business of fostering empathy and engagement, and we have the unique opportunity to provide a lens into lives and experiences that are different from our own. We believe art is most impactful when audiences can come to an understanding of purpose, through an experience of meaning. The human social condition is strengthened by feelings of empathy, community, joy, and learning. 

Storytelling, the essence of theatre, can serve this purpose in remarkable ways, as long as we choose to do so.
